Bank earnings improve as turnaround and integration paths diverge
Margin gains and stronger earnings contrast with Flagstar’s delayed recovery, while acquisition funding, integration and pending merger milestones shape execution.
Deposit growth and margin gains
KeyCorp links its margin outlook to deposit growth and asset repricing. Third-quarter earnings were $0.51 per share versus analysts’ $0.46 estimate. Average deposits reached $151.2 billion, up $3.6 billion from June 30. KeyCorp reiterated its 3.25% net interest margin target for year-end 2027, compared with 2.95% in the third quarter; about $24 billion of lower-yielding securities, swaps and residential mortgages is expected to run off by then.
Citizens Financial raises capital returns despite a revenue miss. Third-quarter net interest income increased 2.7% sequentially and return on tangible common equity reached 15.1%. Citizens Financial raised its quarterly dividend 13% to $0.52 and added $1.3 billion to its repurchase program, with $200 million of fourth-quarter buybacks planned. Capital-markets fee weakness contributed to the revenue shortfall; management projects fourth-quarter net interest income growth of 2.5%–3% from the third quarter.
Cathay General posts record net interest income but reports elevated charge-offs. Third-quarter net interest income reached $211.9 million and net interest margin expanded to 3.52%. Cathay General raised full-year loan and deposit growth guidance. Management cited elevated charge-offs in specific credits while affirming overall portfolio stability and a strong capital position, leaving credit performance as a caveat to the stronger core-revenue picture.
Profitability targets and execution
Fifth Third completes Comerica conversion and projects further earnings gains. The systems conversion finished over Labor Day weekend. Third-quarter adjusted earnings were $1.13 per share and adjusted return on tangible common equity was 20.6%; Fifth Third surpassed two of its three 2027 profitability targets. Management expects remaining integration synergies in the fourth quarter and guided to 9%–10% sequential growth in adjusted pre-provision net revenue.
Citigroup’s stronger earnings face a trading-revenue slowdown. Third-quarter revenue rose 8% to $23.8 billion and net income was $5.2 billion, but trading revenue fell 13% from the previous quarter. Citigroup now expects full-year return on tangible common equity above 11%, versus its previous 10%–11% range. Management warned that normal markets seasonality could reduce fourth-quarter revenue; TD Cowen lowered its price target from $150 to $148 after results.
Flagstar delays turnaround targets and pauses buybacks. Flagstar moved its strategic-target timeline from 2027 to 2028, citing higher rates and inflation. It cut its 2026 net income forecast to $85 million–$95 million from $225 million–$300 million and its 2027 forecast to $400 million–$500 million from $800 million–$900 million. Expected loan-loss provisions rose to $160 million–$170 million for 2026 and $175 million–$225 million for 2027. Buybacks are paused, with a resumption expected sometime in 2027.
Acquisition funding and network integration
First Citizens advances repayment of Silicon Valley Bank acquisition debt. First Citizens has repaid $17 billion, or 47%, of debt associated with its Silicon Valley Bank acquisition and aims to repay the remainder by the end of 2027. That compares with $8.5 billion repaid as of July, when management identified excess liquidity, Federal Home Loan Bank borrowings, long-term debt and brokered deposits as potential funding sources for further payments.
Capital One tests credit-card migration onto Discover’s network. Debit-card migration is complete, and Capital One plans to add more than $175 billion of purchase volume to Discover’s network by 2027. Management is testing which existing credit-card customers to migrate and when, without committing to a full-migration timeline. Improving international acceptance before moving internationally traveling cardholders remains part of the execution plan.
Pending merger milestones
First Hawaiian’s pending TriCo acquisition approaches a shareholder vote. A shareholder vote is scheduled for October 29 on the pending merger. First Hawaiian agreed to acquire TriCo Bancshares for $2 billion, with the transaction expected to close by year-end and mark its return to the mainland. Integration complexity and shareholder scrutiny remain risks.
Esquire’s Signature merger disclosures quantify the proposed combined balance sheet. Unaudited pro forma statements filed October 15 show $4.59 billion in total assets and $3.81 billion in deposits. Esquire stockholders previously approved issuing shares to Signature holders, and the parties announced the final exchange ratio for the proposed merger. The pro forma figures describe combined scale rather than establish that the transaction has closed.
