Bank earnings gains meet compliance costs and margin pressure

Bank of America pays AML penalties as settlement costs reduce quarterly earnings. Third-quarter net income was $6.9 billion, or $0.91 per share, including a $1.2 billion regulatory settlement charge; excluding it, earnings were $1.08 per share. Revenue rose 3% to $30 billion and net interest income increased 8%. Treasury announced $1.21 billion in anti-money-laundering and sanctions penalties, with a third-party lookback and independent governance reviews required. CEO Brian Moynihan said the penalty was paid and remediation expenses were in the run rate; the CFO said there was no asset cap.

Bank of America’s unrealized bond losses exceed $109 billion. The third-quarter paper losses increased 28% from June, Bloomberg reported, attributing the decline in bond values to rising Treasury yields. The losses remain unrealized, distinguishing this balance-sheet valuation exposure from the bank’s reported settlement expense.

Federal Reserve plans five supervisory regions and revised regulatory thresholds. Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman outlined five state-aligned regions, each with one accountable supervisory leader. Regional directors would report directly to the Board’s deputy director for supervision. Bowman also plans broader community-bank treatment for certain traditional, non-complex firms and higher size thresholds before tougher standards apply, but did not provide a revised community-bank definition. These remain planned changes rather than completed implementation.

PNC earns $2.1 billion and projects further interest-income growth. Third-quarter diluted earnings were $4.97 per share, or $5.09 adjusted. Average loans, deposits and net interest income increased, while lower expenses helped bring the efficiency ratio to 57%. PNC returned $1.4 billion through dividends and repurchases. Management expects fourth-quarter net interest margin of at least 3% and $1 billion–$1.1 billion in net interest income growth in 2027. Its raised full-year revenue outlook nevertheless remained below analyst consensus, according to Benzinga.

Citizens Financial raises its dividend and expands repurchase capacity. Third-quarter net income rose 29% year over year to $636 million, with EPS of $1.41. The quarterly dividend increased 13% to $0.52 and the repurchase program expanded to $1.95 billion. Earnings exceeded expectations, but revenue and noninterest income missed consensus as capital-markets fees declined. Citizens Financial projects fourth-quarter net interest income growth of 2.5%–3% and noninterest-income growth of 4%–5% from the third quarter.

U.S. Bancorp raises revenue guidance as expense control supports its earnings beat. Third-quarter EPS was $1.34 versus $1.32 expected, while revenue of $7.97 billion missed the $8 billion estimate. The bank raised full-year revenue-growth guidance to 8%–9% and projected approximately 300 basis points of positive operating leverage, meaning revenue growth outpacing expense growth. For the fourth quarter, U.S. Bancorp expects net interest income of $4.57 billion–$4.61 billion and fee-revenue growth of 13%–14% year over year.

Goldman Sachs beats earnings expectations on equities strength. Third-quarter EPS reached $17.01 and net revenue rose 23% to $18.68 billion. Equities trading revenue of $6.44 billion exceeded expectations, but fixed-income and commodities revenue of $3.47 billion fell short and was slightly below a year earlier. Investment-banking fees and record asset-management fees contributed positively. Goldman Sachs repurchased $3 billion of shares during the quarter.

Morgan Stanley beats estimates and delivers record tangible-equity returns. Third-quarter EPS of $3.03 exceeded the $2.91 estimate, and revenue of $20.34 billion surpassed the $19.95 billion forecast, primarily driven by equities trading. Return on tangible equity reached a record 22.6%. Wealth-management net new assets rose 187% year over year, largely from initial-public-offering-related flows, adding another source of business momentum alongside trading.

BNY reports double-digit revenue growth and $1.4 billion in capital returns. Third-quarter diluted EPS of $2.34 exceeded Wall Street estimates, with revenue up 11.7% year over year to $5.68 billion. Assets under custody and administration reached $63.4 trillion, and assets under management reached $2.2 trillion. BNY returned $1.4 billion to common shareholders through dividends and repurchases.

Wells Fargo grows loans and deposits but retains its annual interest-income outlook. Average loans and deposits each rose 11% year over year, reaching $1.03 trillion and $1.48 trillion, respectively. Consumer nonaccrual loans fell more than 8% to $2.9 billion. Earnings beat expectations, but weaker trading contributed to a revenue miss. Wells Fargo reaffirmed approximately $50 billion in 2026 net interest income and expects fourth-quarter spread income of $13 billion.

Wells Fargo deploys proprietary blockchain infrastructure for tokenized deposits. Its third-quarter earnings-call summary described deployment as part of technology investments intended to improve efficiency and customer experience. The previously announced program was scheduled to begin this fall for selected corporate and commercial clients, initially covering U.S. dollars and British pounds for cross-border payments. Wells Fargo plans broader client, country and currency coverage over the following year; that expansion remains a plan.

ICICI Bank grows profit as net interest margin narrows. Fiscal second-quarter profit rose 20.1% year over year to INR 148.43 billion, supported by higher net interest income, fee income and lending growth. Deposits and loans expanded, and the net nonperforming-asset ratio fell to 0.3%. Net interest margin declined to 4.18% and is expected to moderate further in the third quarter before a possible fourth-quarter recovery, leaving margin pressure alongside stronger earnings and asset quality.
